Big Al

Big Al represents a searching for a pure form of OWL. It is based on an idea that Plato put forward. In each thing there is an essence of that thing that makes it what it is. So this is not simply an owl - it is the essence of Owl.

Each owl has the spirit of this thing in it.

On March 6, 2001, I presented this sculpture as a gift to Dr. Morton Goldberg of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As the Chief of that department, he has created one of the most prestigious centers of it's kind. His team of doctors help patients recieve the best eye and vision care available anywhere in the world. His vision of excellence extends throughout the Wilmer portion of the hospital. Thanks to Dr.Goldberg's eye for style and functionality, the center is a world class operation. The surroundings are rich in history and are very beautiful. I am very honored that Dr. Goldberg has seen fit to display "Big Al" in a prominent place - it can be seen at the Wilmer courtyard at Johns Hopkins Hospital here in Baltimore.
